Why consider hip surgery?
Do you live in Newcastle under Lyme, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire or Cheshire? Are you experiencing pain and /or stiffness in your hip which is interfering with your normal daily activities?
There are a number of causes of hip pain, such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis, trochanteric bursitis, tendinitis, labral cartilage tears, impingement, groin strain, piriformis syndrome and others. Mr Lim will make a diagnosis based on your history, examination and usually xrays. Sometimes, a MRI scan may be needed. These investigations can be arranged by Mr Lim if you have not already had them organised by your GP or Physiotherapist.
A common cause of pain is arthritis. The most common type of arthritis is osteoarthritis which occurs due to gradual wear and tear of a joint. Another form of arthritis is rheumatoid arthritis which causes inflammation of the joint.
In both cases, arthritis wears away the normal cartilage covering the surface of the joint and the bone underneath becomes damaged. This is what causes pain and/or stiffness in the joint.
When Hip Surgery in Newcastle under Lyme, Stoke on Trent & Staffordshire is Required
Most individuals will start to manage their pain and symptoms non-surgically with painkillers. The use of walking sticks, trekking poles or crutches can also help. In some cases, a steroid injection into the hip joint may reduce the pain and stiffness.
When the non surgical methods become less effective or the arthritis becomes worse, a total hip replacement may be an option to consider. If you do not have significant arthritis then the treatment would be tailored to best treat your hip and may involve different painkillers, injections, physiotherapy, lifestyle modifications, key hole surgery (hip arthroscopy) or other non-replacement hip surgery depending on the condition and its severity.
To discuss your options you can arrange a consultation with Mr. Lim where you will have a chance to have an examination of your hip and time to ask any questions you may have.
